Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: What is Town Watch?
A: We are a volunteer organization made up of neighbors in the South of South neighborhood, including both homeowners and renters. We are a part of TWIS (Town Watch Integrated Services) that supports/trains all of the town watch groups throughout the city.
Q: What does Town Watch do?
A: Our primary mission is to patrol the neighborhoods in which our members live and to be “eyes and ears” for the community. Currently, we patrol the blocks from Grays Ferry Ave. to 19th St. between Bainbridge St. and Kimball St. We wear orange vests or shirts to maintain a visible presence that serves as a crime deterrent. If we ever encounter crime, we report it directly to the police or the appropriate authority. MEMBERS NEVER INTERVENE IN CRIME!!
Q: How much time is required?
A: It’s up to you! Each “shift” is one hour. You can patrol every week, once a month, or anywhere in between - you decide.
Q: When would I have to patrol?
A: We currently patrol Mondays through Thursdays (subject to change), between the hours of 6 PM and 10 PM (also subject to change). You can schedule yourself on the website (“calendar” link) for as many shifts as you would like.
Q: Do I patrol alone?
A: No, you will never patrol alone. We ask that there be 3 people per shift. Dogs are welcome. If you have a last-minute change and cannot make your shift, we ask that you try to find a replacement via e-mail or phone.
Q: Is there anything I can do if I choose not to patrol?
A: Absolutely! Another branch of town watch is the “eyes and ears” group…these are our neighbors who are always vigilant of our streets and who are willing to report crime or problems such as graffiti, unsafe sidewalks, abandoned homes, etc.
Q: Why should I join Town Watch?
A: There are so many reasons! We are a diverse and active group that cares about our community. Joining Town Watch is a proactive step towards a safer and more united neighborhood without a huge time commitment. Plus, it is an opportunity to get to know your neighbors!
Do it for your kids, do it for your safety, do it for your health - just do it!
